Hey Commoners, since I know you’ve been looking in the mirror wondering why you aren’t as good-looking as me, I’ve decided to give some book/video recommendations that will help you be great! Don’t worry, I believe in you. With some effort, you’ll look like the next Steve Urkel in no time.
Money – How to be Rich by Naval – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-TZqOsVCNM
Naval is one of the top entrepreneurs in the world, co-founder of AngelList, and investor in Uber, Twitter, Notion, etc. This video guide isn’t a boring A to Z with detailed prescriptions (i.e., invest in BlueChipStock9000, sell your used baseball cards, etc.). It’s super interesting because Naval plays around with abstract concepts that most of us might be missing or not thinking about in our day-to-day lives. It only takes one idea to completely shift your perspective of the world and change your life. For example, he says there are no get-rich-quick schemes, which is really unfortunate because now this means we should probably stop scamming the elderly (not good, don’t recommend).
Muscles – Eat to Live by Dr. Joel Fuhrman – https://www.amazon.com/Eat-Live-Amazing-Nutrient-Rich-Sustained/dp/031612091X
The meatheads in my audience are going to hate this one because it’s not about guzzling protein shakes and lifting big heavy plates. To their credit, however, food is super personal, and we actually don’t agree with everything/a lot that is in this book. The reason this book is interesting is that Dr. Fuhrman talks about the ANDI score, a scoring system to rate foods based on their nutritional content. This is why he recommends a lot of vegetables, nuts, beans, etc., and breaks each food down by that score. He has his own meal plans/strategies to help you lose weight/feel full and healthy – which is great because I know most of my audience hasn’t eaten a vegetable since Vietnam.
Mastery – Never Split the Difference by Chris Voss – https://www.amazon.com/Never-Split-Difference-Negotiating-Depended/dp/0062407805
Chris Voss is a former FBI lead hostage negotiator, and he talks about the principles he used to deal with bank robbers, criminals, and kidnappers. So, basically, this is great for dealing with unsavory people like your family members during holiday parties. We like this book in particular because it offers prescriptions about actionable steps you can take in your daily life that will help with your career and personal life. For example, he talks about how the act of “mirroring,” i.e., repeating what the other person says back to them, can help build rapport between people. I have tried this technique on my future mother-in-law, and now she doesn’t hate me anymore; she only really dislikes me.
